This reaction from the Vatican can only be described as an over-reaction. It goes without saying that official Catholicdom beleives the LDS ordinances on behalf of their dead have no validity and are not recognized by God as Catholics understand Him. It must therefore be looked on as an afront to the dignity of the dead but that doesn't hold water either as no obligations are forced on the dead. So what it boils down to is "contempt of priest" issue because Mormons don't recognize Catholic authority in things eternal. It becomes a Catholic ego thing. They have placed their own ego above the needs of people everywhere to learn of their Catholic family heritage. It should be remembered that even Mormons have Catholic ancestors and, as family members, it should be our decision not some Cathoilic priest who is not a family member and didn't know the dead person anyway.
