Upcoming and a first ever PNCC Webinar

Chicken Barbecue at St. Mary’s PNCC, Duryea, PA: One of the most enjoyable things about the summer is barbeques. Whether you enjoy them on your patio with your family or at one of the many local festivals, this summer favorite can’t be beat. Well, if you have room for just one more, and I know that you do, why not take a break from the kitchen next weekend and attend St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church’s annual chicken barbeque dinner in Duryea, PA? The parish committee of St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will hold its chicken barbeque dinner Saturday, August 28th, from 2-6 p.m. at the church, 200 Stephenson St., Duryea, PA. The menu includes a half chicken, a baked potato, green beans, a roll and butter. Beverages and desserts are extra. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased in advance by calling the rectory office at 570-457-2291. Takeouts will be available as well.

Parish and Community Picnic at Holy Trinity and St. Joseph in Linden, NJ: The annual parish and community picnic will be held on the Holy Trinity and St. Joseph PNCC church grounds, 407 Ziegler Avenue, Linden, NJ, Sunday, September 12th. The picnic is preceded by High Holy Mass in Polish at 11am, Rev. Jan Kość principal celebrant. The menu includes a featured a chicken dinner, as well as a full selection of Polish favorites like homemade pierogi, gołąbki (stuffed cabbage), and kielbasa. Other picnic favorites will be featured as well as fun and games. All are welcome.

PNCC Webinar: The Western Diocese of the PNCC is hosting a Webinar on the history and organization of the PNCC. All that is required to attend is a computer with Internet access. The Webinar is scheduled for Saturday, September 18th beginning at 9:30am Central Time (10:30am Eastern Time). The main presentation will be about one hour and there will be a half-hour available for questions and discussion after the main presentation. Registration detail are not yet available. I will provide updated information as it becomes available.

Fall Social and Dinner at Our Savior, Lawrenceville, NJ: Our Savior PNCC, 2300 Princeton Pike, Lawrenceville, NJ is planning for its first ever Fall Social and Roast Beef dinner scheduled for Sunday, September 19th. Call 609-882-7880 for more information.

More good eats – and festivals

Ethnic Food and Bake Sale, hosted by Good Shepherd Polish National Catholic Church, during the Plymouth Alive Kielbasa Fest, August 27th and 28th, in front of Sport-Jes, 30 East Main Street, Plymouth, PA. Homemade pierogies, haluski and baked goods on the menu.

St. John the Baptist Polish National Catholic Church, 414 West Oak Street, Frackville, PA will hold a bleenie sale beginning at 11 a.m., Friday, August 20th at the church. The church stages bleenie sales every other week throughout the summer.

Resurrection PNC Church will hold a Polish Crepe (Naleśniki) Dinner, 5 to 7 p.m., on Thursday, August 19th at 1835 West Temperance Rd., Temperance, MI. Carry out is available. Cost: $10. For more information please call 734-847-5052.

Minneapolis, MN: From the Twin Cities Daily Planet: Two Polish festivals for Minneapolis

For Polish families in Northeast Minneapolis there is the Twin Cities Polish Festival – and then there is THE Polish Fest. The latter, sponsored by Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church, was Saturday, August 7, at the church at 420 22nd Ave NE. Parishioners at Sacred Heart of Jesus know that their fest long preceded the neophyte Twin Cities Polish Festival which is coming up August 14-15 at St. Anthony.

The bottom line: you just can’t have enough Polish festivity.

The Twin Cities Polish Festival, new on the festival scene, features a wide range of cultural, historical and educational displays, musical and dance entertainment and traditional foods and beverages. Attendees of whatever ethnic persuasion will enjoy “all things Polish,” presenting a kaleidoscope of unique cultural and educational displays, food and entertainment. Highlights include the Kresy-Syberia Exhibit, a literary display featuring Polish writer Joseph Conrad, a major Chopin performance, a whirlwind of polka, and a Polish Film Festival co-sponsored by Minnesota Film Arts.

Albany, NY: The Polish Community Center, 225 Washington Ave Ext, Albany is sponsoring a Polish-American buffet, Friday, August 13th from 4 to 8pm and a Polka dance – picnic with Rymanowski Brothers Band on Sunday, August 15th from 2:30 to 6:30pm. Call 518-456-3995 for more information.

Wilkes-Barre, PA: Takeouts-Only Chicken Barbecue on Saturday, August 14th from 1 to 4pm at Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church, Sheridan Street, Heights, Wilkes-Barre. Dinners are $8. Tickets sold at the door.

Buffalo, NY: Annual Dozynki Harvest Festival and the Third Buffalo’s Best Pierogi Contest at Corpus Christi Church, 199 Clark Street, Buffalo, NY on Saturday, August 21st from 12:30pm till 11:30pm and Sunday, August 22nd from 12:45pm until 5:30pm. The Pierogi Earting Contest will take place Saturday at 4:30pm.

So come watch or particpate!!! The Church’s Pierogi contest has grown to become a big hit. This year they will have three categories… traditional, non traditional, and for the first time commercial (restaurant, businesses, etc.). Cathedral events – block party and flea market

Giant Indoor Flea Market at St. Stanislaus PNCC Center from Friday, August 20th to Sunday, August 22nd. Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m., 530 E. Elm St., Scranton. The market features antiques, collectibles, furniture, toys, jewelry, tools, clothing, household items; and of course, homemade Polish food.

St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Cathedral will hold a Block Party, August 27th and 28th from 5-10 p.m., Pittston Avenue and East Elm Street featuring kielbasa, potato pancakes, pierogies, noodles and cabbage, pizza, steak and cheese sandwiches, clams, drinks, games and music. Out and About in Polonia

Utica Monday Night Polish Heritage Celebration: Holy Spirit PNCC will be at the Utica Monday Night Polish Heritage Celebration on Monday, August 2nd, selling homemade Polish food at Chancellor Park, Bleecker & Kent St., Utica. The Utica Monday Night Polish Heritage Celebration will feature a performance by Jasiu Klocek and the Salt City Brass Polka Band from 6:30 —“ 9:00.

Ychtis Polish Girls’ Group: To perform at Corpus Christi Church, 199 Clark St., Buffalo, NY on Friday, August 6th at 7:00 p.m.

Ychtis, the award-winning girls’ song and dance group from Poland, will visit Buffalo August 6 with a performance at Corpus Christi Church. The name of the ensemble is taken from the Greek word for fish. The group specializes in religious songs. Among their repertoire is music based on the poetry of the late Fr. Jan Twardowski, one of Poland’s beloved poets. They also sing songs about the former Polish city of Lwów, which has a warm place in the hearts of many Poles even though it is now in Ukraine.

The five member group of 10-15 year old girls will sing in Polish and in English as well as tap dance. The group has been in existence for 15 years and is based in the city of Katowice in the industrial region of Silesia.

Ychtis’ mission is to give young people with difficult family situations the opportunity to develop their inner and outer talents through song and dance. Ychtis has appeared on Television and toured Europe where they have won first place in a number of contests. This is their second visit to Buffalo and other cities in North America, where, in addition to Buffalo they will perform in Chicago, Cleveland, Yonkers, Newark as well as a number of cities in Canada.

The group’s performance in the beautiful sanctuary of Corpus Christi Church promises to provide an uplifting experience for all. Admission is free, but a free will donation will be requested at the end of the show to help offset the group’s expenses.

Canal Days Celebration in Little Falls, NY: Enjoy a fun day at Little Falls’ 23rd annual Canal Days, August 13th to 15th. Holy Spirit PNCC will be serving Polish food prepared by its members. Polish dishes will be available as follows:

  • Fri. 8/13, at 5pm and during the parade in front of —œRick’s Style-Inn— 580 East Main Street, Little Falls.
  • Sat. 8/14, from 11am to 4pm at the church, 618 E. Gansevoort St., Little Falls.

On Hungarian wines

From the NY Times: Hidden in Hungary, Treasures on the Vine

The mold covered every surface of the cellar, coating the walls and ceilings in layers of loose black gauze. On one shelf, sheets of mold had grown so thick that it was nearly impossible to tell what was underneath, making the ancient wine bottles seem like ash-colored homunculi, an army of toy soldiers made from fungus.

Walking farther into the cellar, I ducked under a low ceiling and felt dangling fingers of mold touch my head.

—œThe mold is fed by the wine that evaporates,— said my guide, Zsuzsanna Szobonya, leading me into a hexagonal tasting room where even the arabesque chandelier overhead was adorned with more black fluff. —œTry this,— she said.

Standing in the dim light, I sniffed, then tasted. Though the cellar air was damp and musty, the scent from the glass was richly aromatic and floral. The wine, a Tokaji aszu, was full of citrus blossoms and fruit in the nose. In the mouth, crisp flavors of apricot and orange burst forth, followed by an invigoratingly sharp finish that begged for another quick sip.

Lucky mold, I thought.

—œCan you imagine?— Ms. Szobonya asked, taking a sip. —œSo light and fresh, and yet it’s about 20 percent sugar.—

Though not all wines from the region are quite so saccharine, the legendary aszu sweet wines were a large part of what had brought me to this corner of northeastern Hungary. Known by the name of the region’s main winemaking town, Tokaj, the moist and moldy area at the confluence of two mysterious, slow-moving rivers is the oldest classified wine region in Europe —” older than Bordeaux in France, older than Porto in Portugal, older than Chianti in Italy. In fact, many of the stone wine cellars here date to the mid-16th century.

And now, 20 years after the changes that brought democracy, market capitalism and wide-open borders to the former Eastern bloc, Tokaj is emerging as one of the most interesting wine regions in Europe, not just for its sweet aszus and distinctive dry whites, but also for its unusual blend of history and cultures —” Jewish, Russian, Hungarian and Greek —” and for the low-key experience of a less-traveled wine trail where the curious and enterprising can easily rub shoulders with working winemakers, often right in their homes and vineyards…

I’ve had a few, particularly Egri Bikavér (“Bull’s Blood of Eger”). Definitely a full region of wines worth exploring, in person or through your local wine merchant.

His hot weather experience as seen through the eyes of old Polish wisdom is found in Shchav Soup: Recipe for a Hot Day

Back in the old days before anybody had air-conditioning, my mother, a Polish woman from the old country, felt that the surest cure for hot weather was szczawiowa zupa, shchav, swiss chard soup.

She’d get up early on a day that promised to be in the high 90s, and she’d fix schav. It wouldn’t take long and it didn’t require a lot of cooking, so it didn’t heat up our apartment. When she had it prepared, she’d stick it into the refrigerator to cool off. In the evening, she’d serve it for dinner when it was in the 90s both outside and inside.

Believe me, it always took the temperature down 10 degrees.

Around the Central Diocese – good eats

Holy Mother of Sorrows PNCC, 212 Wyoming Ave., Dupont, PA will be holding its 47th Annual Open Pit Chicken Barbecue on Saturday, July 17th from 12-6 p.m. on the church grounds. Dinner includes: half chicken, french fries, homemade coleslaw, beverage, cake, and rolls from Cwikla’s Bakery. Tickets are available at the door or can be purchased in advance at the recory or from any YMSofR member. Tickets are $9.

Good Shepherd Polish National Catholic Church, 269 E. Main St., Plymouth, PA will hold a pierogi sale on Sunday, July 25th. Varieties include potato with cheese and potato with jalapeno peppers. Cost is $7 per dozen. Call 570-690-5411 to order. Pickup potato and cheese orders from 3-5 p.m.; potato and jalapeno from 5-6 p.m.

The Ladies Adoration Society of St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church, 200 Stephenson St., Duryea, PA will have spaghetti dinner Sunday, July 25th from 1-3 p.m. at the church. Takeouts will be available from 12-1 p.m. The menu includes salad, spaghetti and meatballs, and rolls with butter. Beverages and desserts are extra. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased in advance by calling Ladies Adoration Society President Dolores Biscontini at 570-457-9381. You may also place an advance order for takeout meals by calling Mrs. Biscontini.

Bell Festival in New York Mills

Happening today, Saturday, July 10th (from the Rome Sentinel): Bell Festival in New York Mills

NEW YORK MILLS —” The annual Village Bell Festival will be held today and Saturday in the Main Street park. Food, rides, and games will be going on throughout the weekend. There will be an two-day long villagewide garage sale and craft fair starting at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. respectively.

The festival is a family affair and no alcoholic beverages will be allowed on village property.

Saturday

Starting at noon and lasting all day:

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church will offer various Polish dishes.
The New York Mills Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will offer hot dogs, beverages, and a summer basket raffle.
The Red Knights will offer strawberry shortcake, a snowmobile trailer raffle, and a variety basket raffle.
Malson-Jones VFW Ladies Auxiliary will offer fruit turnovers.

Noon – 9 p.m. Kiddie rides and games.
Noon – Chicken barbecue sponsored by the New York Mills Lions Club
4 p.m. Hot air balloon walk and balloon tethering, weather permitting.
5 p.m. Gigantic Parade
6 p.m. Citizen of the year award
7-8:30 p.m. Joe Angerosa Elvis impersonator show in Veteran’s Park.

Polish Summer Festival 2010 in Albany NY

The Polish Community Center at 225 Washington Ave Ext, Albany, NY is hosting a Polish Summer Festival 2010 on Saturday, July 17th from 2:30-8:30pm and Sunday, July 18th from 2-7pm.

Saturday’s activities include music by the Maestro’s Men & Stephanie’s Honky Band, a Polish- American kitchen with take-out available, a Polish Cultural Exhibit, as well as a Basket Raffle, bake sale, and an imported Polish beer tasting. Saturday admission is $15. Children 16 and under free.

Sunday is Family Day with kids activities, games, and a Bouncy Bounce. There will also be a participatory pierogi making demonstration. Music by the Polka Family Band with special appearance by “Hexplay” reunion from 5-6 pm. The St. Adalbert’s Dance troop will perform and the Polish- American kitchen, Polish Cultural Exhibit, as well as a Basket Raffle, bake sale, and an imported Polish beer tasting will continue. Sunday admission is $12. Children 16 and under free.

Advance ticket price for Saturday and Sunday is $22, a $5 savings. Advance tickets must be purchased and paid-in-full by July 9th.

The PCC has a spacious dance floor, plenty of parking. All Are Welcome!
