Sacred Vocations Month

June is Sacred Vocations Month in the Polish National Catholic Church. During the month we particularly focus our prayer on vocations to Holy Orders within the Church. We further consider our loyal and dedicated clergy who have served many years, offering their guidance, counseling, assistance, hard work, and service in the cause of drawing all to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

First and foremost, we must pray for vocations. Too often we see dwindling congregations and the closing of churches all around us. Within the PNCC we sometimes lament over the state of the Church in our country, but the reality is far different. Throughout our nation, and all around the world, people are calling out to us, to our One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church with its democratic form of governance, and are asking for priests and new parishes. The only thing holding us back from going out into the field and reaping this harvest (Luke 10:2) is a lack of vocations.

The life of service within the Church is not without its occasional difficulties, but instead of focusing on temporary and occasional drawbacks, think rather to the blessing our God showers upon those who give generously of themselves (Malachi 3:10), of plain, hard working men who are ready to step up and work.

Also, during the month of June, we are asked to give generously to our Clergy Pension Fund. The Fund was established to aid our retired clergy who have given service to the Lord all their lives. A small stipend aids and adds to their Social Security benefits. Currently, the stipend for the clergy is $600 per month. The theme of the Fund is: “Retire with Dignity.” So, on Father’s Day each year the Polish National Catholic Church sets aside a second collection to be taken for the Clergy Pension Fund. In 2011 the Clergy Pension Fund began accepting credit cards for donations to the fund through PayPal. Please donate generously to this worthy cause.

Music at the Meeting House: Shaker Heritage Folk Benefit

Stephen Iachetta and Rod Driscoll as Friends Union Band will be performing this evening, Saturday, April 16th, 7:30pm at a very special folk concert evening launching the “Music at the Meeting House” series. The concert will take place at the Historic 1848 Shaker Meeting House, 25 Meeting House Road, (Next to Albany International Airport), Colonie, NY. Refreshments will be served and proceeds will help support the Shaker Heritage Society – America’s First Shaker Settlement circa 1776.

Friends Union Band features Adirondack hammer dulcimer, 6 and 12 string guitar, and vocalist, Rod Driscoll with fiddle master Steve Iachetta. Their repertoire consists of innovative and traditional roots music. I highly recommend attending. A good cause and great music!

The Shaker Heritage Society is a chartered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation.

Update on the Streator dispute

STREATOR — No criminal prosecution is expected in a case involving a monsignor’s allegation that an 86-year-old woman took money that did not belong to her group.

The matter instead is civil, said LaSalle County State’s Attorney Brian Towne. Dorothy Swital of Streator has hired a lawyer and a benefit will be held Sunday to pay her expenses.

Monsignor John Prendergast, head of the now-combined Streator parishes, earlier said Swital transferred two certificates of deposit from the now-defunct St. Casimir Altar and Rosary Society to the new Polish Rosary Society.

The $35,622 belongs to the new St. Michael the Archangel parish and not her group, said Prendergast.

“We have been in consultation with the lawyers involved,” said Towne. “The money is not missing. We know exactly where it is and when you get into that kind of situation, it’s a civil matter.”

Swital said she has had no contact with Prendergast but continues to believe it is the new group’s money. “I’ve gotten a lot of support,” she said. “I would say it’s three to one.

“We gave it (the money) to the church when they needed it,” said Swital. “We’ve done nothing wrong.”

Prendergast and diocesan officials continue to maintain it is church money, citing both canon (church) and civil law.

A chicken and spaghetti meal for Swital’s defense fund will run from noon until 3 p.m. Sunday at Polish National Alliance Hall, 906 Livingston St.

Four Streator Roman Catholic parishes, including St. Casimir, were combined into one parish. A new church building on the north side is planned.

Seems an issue of money over souls; the letter of the law over the spirit of the law. Why is recourse always to the law? Can’t Christians resolve such things among themselves? St. Paul warned us about this — see 1 Corinthians 6:1-7. How will the Monsignor be a judge of the world when he must run to authorities over such a simple matter?

The Monsignor may have his laws books straight, but then, so did the Pharisees. If he were to relent, what harm would come – these ladies would support their church wholeheartedly, with their prayer, hard work, and money. Instead, he will win, and in the process their hearts and faith will be broken. Rather than hallowed victory, he and the Church he is supposed to represent will have hollow victory.

The voice of the LORD cries to the city —
and it is sound wisdom to fear thy name:
“Hear, O tribe and assembly of the city!
Therefore I have begun to smite you,
making you desolate because of your sins.
You shall eat, but not be satisfied,
and there shall be hunger in your inward parts;
you shall put away, but not save,
and what you save I will give to the sword.
You shall sow, but not reap;
you shall tread olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil;
you shall tread grapes, but not drink wine.” — Micah 6:9,13-15

My suggestion, leave the Monsignor his money, let him wallow in it and eat its fruit. Come to your nearest PNCC Parish, or start one in Streator, where your hard work and contribution will always be within your control. As you say: the things you have worked for, for the benefit of the Church. No one will grasp at your purse while you dine at the table of the Lord.

Septuagesima Sunday

Do you not know that you are the temple of God,

and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

Leviticus:

The Book of Leviticus may seem like one of the most boring books in the Bible. It is a book of laws, rules and regulations given to Moses concerning how people should live. If we look at this as just a book of laws we will get bored, we will get frustrated, we will wonder why God bothered with some of this.

What we need to have in our heats as we study this book is the sentence found in the second verse from today’s reading: “Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.” The book is about what it takes to be holy, to approach God in His temple, prepared to meet Him. God asks us to meet Him in a state of personal and communal holiness and perfection.

Let’s remember that, we are going to meet God, and we need to be holy to do it.

Where’s God:

I have a question, Where does God live?

What do we hear: God lives in heaven. God is everywhere. God is with us.

Fr. Stephen Freeman recently wrote a book which will be available starting March 1st, , “Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Storey Universe.”

He asks that we think about our encounter with God, how we perceive Him, how we perceive our world. How we encounter Him, how we encounter our world. If God dwells in heaven, on a spiritual plane, somewhere we cannot see or know, He dwells apart from us. He lives upstairs. We live in a natural world where we try to make sense of how stuff works, why rain falls, why the sky is blue, why the energy of atoms can be configured in so many different ways that they make up all we see. We live downstairs.

In the world we have science, medicine, arts, entertainment. Sure, we acknowledge God, but He is in the spiritual realm in a place we can’t quite touch. When we chance across the holy, and receive communion, or get splashed with holy water, or get the cross we have, on the chain around our necks, blessed, we briefly touch on the spiritual world, but don’t quite go there. We don’t dive into it. God isn’t really encountered in the two storey world because God is upstairs and we are downstairs.

Think how Hollywood loves to use the spiritual realm to scare us, to heighten our senses. We get demons, exorcists, all sorts of spooky stuff, and in the process we recognize a god, who lives apart from us, upstairs in the spiritual realm, who is only there to do magical and spooky stuff, raising the dead, healing the sick, creating these well publicized tourist attractions called apparitions.

God is there, we are here, God and the world are apart, and we’re no more holy and perfect for it. In fact, we are going backwards.

Remember, we are going to meet God, and we need to be holy to do it. How do we get there?

Getting there:

Leviticus tells us that to get there, to become holy and perfect, we are to be like God. We are to be holy like He is holy. We should not hate outwardly or in our hearts, because we are to be like God who bears no hatred. We shouldn’t take revenge or cherish grudges against anyone, Because we are to be like God who doesn’t seek revenge and who doesn’t bear grudges. We are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, because if we are like God, we must love like He does.

St. Paul goes on to tell us that we are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in us. Not just lives with us, like a roommate, The Spirit doesn’t stop by every Sunday like an invited guest, He dwells in us, lives in us, in our hearts, in our hands, in our minds, in every aspect of who we are as people. He is there when we wake and when we sleep, when we work, and pray, and eat. He is there when we cry, and laugh, and even when we sin. He is right there in us and with us continuously calling us to be holy and perfect as I am holy and perfect.

Is God crazy?

Now we need to pause, and look at ourselves. My first question would be, Is God crazy? God wants me to become like Him? But He lives upstairs on the spiritual plane, sure He’s everywhere, but that’s just like saying He’s nowhere. I can’t see Him or grasp Him, or be with Him, He’s just too different, too far away, too spooky. And perfect! I’m the farthest thing from perfect. I sin. Maybe I gamble, or eat, or drink, or smoke, or yell at the kids, or get frustrated with co-workers and annoying drivers a little too much, but perfect and holy, no. What does the Man Upstairs expect from me?

“Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.”

Jesus:

The Gospel of St. John begins with a beautiful series of phrases about the coming of Jesus. At verse 14 we find: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.” The Word became flesh, the Word is Jesus, the Son of God, His Word sent forth who existed from all eternity. The Word became flesh, became human, and came to dwell with us. Not as a buddy, roommate, friend, traveling companion, doer of spooky miracle things, but as a man to dwell, to share in the world, with us.

God came to dwell with us. Dwelling with us He was tempted, He bore infirmities, He was like His brethren, He stooped and washed feet, He cried over Jerusalem and was moved to sorrow at the death of His friend Lazarus. He suffered and He died. He dwelt with us to raise us to holiness and perfection. He dwelt with us to show us the way to what was possible, here, now, on earth, in the present.

He teaches us:

Jesus teaches us how to live like God lives, how to be holy and perfect like God in today’s Gospel. The Message translation of the bible makes Jesus’ words very plain:

‘Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.’ Is that going to get us anywhere? Here’s what I propose: ‘Don’t hit back at all.’ If someone strikes you, stand there and take it.

If someone drags you into court and sues for the shirt off your back, giftwrap your best coat and make a present of it.

If someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously.

I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer.

This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty.

“In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”

Jesus is teaching us that the requirement for meeting God is to be holy and perfect like He is. By doing these everyday, and sometimes difficult things, we will reach the holiness and perfection of God.

Where’s God?

Do any of you live in a two storey house, or an apartment building. If you do, you know what it like to have someone living upstairs. You kind of know they are there. Sometimes you hear them clunking about, maybe a little music or the TV, and once and a while you encounter them in the hallway. You nod and whisper hello.

Isn’t that how we treat God? Isn’t He that upstairs neighbor we never really see? Once and a while we encounter Him, brief miraculous seconds, in communion, when we feel particularly loved, or when we are scared. In those brief encounters a whispered prayer, a little hello and a nod to the upstairs neighbor.

Fr. Freeman’s book and today’s readings talk about a One-Storey Universe. God isn’t up there, He’s here. He dwells with us, in the same apartment, on the same floor, at the same supper table, in the same car on the way to and fro. We have to realize His presence in our lives and in our world. We have to encounter God full on every day as part of and essential to our lives. He isn’t going away. God isn’t hiding in heaven. God doesn’t dwell apart from us on a far away spiritual plane, upstairs, but is here, present and active, dwelling with us in this time and place. We need to immerse ourselves in Him.

When we come to communion today, let’s not nibble at God or quietly let Him dissolve on our tongues, because its not a magical spooky pill. It is God’s body given to us as food – EAT! When we bless ourselves on the way into or out of church, let’s grab a handful of that holy water and pour it over our heads, knowing that Jesus washed His disciples feet with that water, was immersed in that water at baptism, and that water flowed out of His side. Cherish it and bathe in it! When we confess, let us cry over our sins, and know that God loves us so much He has forgotten them. When we hear the sacrament of the Word, let us learn from it, and learn to live the way God lives. Completely feel and know that God is here, downstairs with us.

Then, let us go out, immersed in God, fed by God, dwelling with God, understanding God, and forgiven by God — to forgive others, wash others, baptize others, feed others, teach others. God is here with us and them, not somewhere else. As we do this, as we live with our God who lives with us, we — will — be — changed. We will become more and more holy, more and more perfect, and we will meet God. Amen.

Father Gary Spencer of Holy Trinity Parish in Woodlawn, New York is in jail — and needs your help. From Fr. Gary:

Fraternalism – working together for the betterment of all

From the Times Leader: Fraternal Societies of Northeast Pennsylvania support Domestic Violence Service Center

Domestic Violence Service Center, which serves Luzerne and Carbon counties, has received a large donation of personal care products, other items and a monetary Christmas gift from the Fraternal Societies of Northeast Pennsylvania. DVSC provides safe shelter and direct services to battered and homeless women and their children. FSNEPA is comprised of six fraternal benefit societies whose charitable efforts are primarily funded by the sale of life insurance and other financial services.

Where charity and love prevail

From CBS4 Denver: Good Samaritan Comes To The Rescue After Church Vandalism

(CBS4) – A Good Samaritan has come to the rescue for a Catholic church in the Denver area.

In July someone stole the 5 foot statue outside the Saint Francis Assisi Parish. The church bought a $1,500 replacement but then that statue was vandalized.

An Adams County woman saw the story in the paper and decided to help. She just goes by Angie and has experience working with fiberglass. In her free time she has been piecing together the statue.

“Here was this horribly damaged statue, and I felt bad. So I thought ‘Well, I can do that,’” she said.

Angie said there’s a message she’d like to share in relation to her efforts.

“If you can help out, volunteer and help out. It’s not harming anyone to help,” she said…

This Sunday – The Great Orchestra – WOŚP

It is time once again to support the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity.

The 19th Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra will be held on Sunday, January 9th. This year, the Orchestra will be raising money to buy medical equipment for children with urological and nephrological diseases

Sylwester Prokurat, Assistant Professor, Ph. D explains the need:

We would like to be able to detect diseases of the urinary tract earlier, because this enables early treatment and urological intervention. The reason why it is so important is that an early diagnosis may have a considerable impact on the patient’s future life.

When a developmental defect of the urinary tract is detected in a little patient, additional diagnostics is necessary, including bladder functioning tests. Since very often such defects are spotted in newborn babies, it is crucial to provide early treatment with the help of precise urological devices.

Another significant problem connected with kidney patients is the growing number of cases of severe kidney damage. As medicine progresses and new difficult yet necessary procedures are being introduced such as bone marrow transplant, liver transplant or heart transplant, the number of patients with acute kidney insufficiency is growing.

It is extremely important that the doctor has the access to so-called continuous hemofiltration methods, instead of having to send a patient to another clinic, sometimes hundreds kilometers away, where it is possible to eliminate toxins. Today, so-called intensive nephrology also includes early kidney support treatment or continuous hemofiltration treatment, aimed at stabilizing the patient, controlling the amount of water in his or her organism, supporting treatment of sepsis (especially within the first 24 hours), and eliminating toxins in cases of mushroom and drug poisonings.

In all those cases time and accessibility of treatment play a decisive role. Modern continuous hemofiltration devices give doctors a wide range of possible treatments, including plasmapheresis (therapeutic plasma transfusion) used in cases of poisoning. These methods are recommended and used in all European countries.

That is why it is very important now that specialists from the fields of nephrology, urology and intensive care work together in order to:

  • Improve early diagnostics of urinary tract and provide efficient treatment;
  • Prevent severe kidney damage in cases of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in patients in intensive care units;
  • Keep high standard of continuous hemofiltration treatment in children with acute kidney disease;
  • Diagnose and treat hypertension in children.

St. Nicholas Wonderworker

Nicholas lived in the third and fourth century in Asia Minor. Born the only son of pious parents, as a young priest he distributed the entire estate of his parents to the poor. The faithful chose him bishop of the city of Myra. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. He is the patron of sailors and travelers, as well as girls wishing to be married. St. Nicholas is also considered an advocate of people who have been wronged by fate.
