At the Citizens Voice: Regional PNCC head elected church’s seventh prime bishop

Bishop Anthony Mikovsky, the leader of the Scranton-based Central Diocese of the Polish National Catholic Church, was elected on Tuesday to the denomination’s highest post.

The New Jersey-native, who has spent his 13-year priesthood serving in the city, was elected prime bishop during the 23rd General Synod in Niagara Falls, Ontario, by a two-thirds majority of the ordained and lay delegates, including the prime bishop-elect’s father.

Mikovsky has been bishop of the Central Diocese and pastor of St. Stanislaus Cathedral since 2006. Before becoming bishop, he served as the assistant pastor at St. Stanislaus, the mother church of the denomination, beginning in 1997.

In his new post he will move less than two blocks from the East Locust Street cathedral to the seat of the Polish National Catholic Church on Pittston Avenue.

“I’m overwhelmed,” he said by phone Tuesday, not long after the vote. “When people put trust in you to lead them in God’s field, and in going forward to build up the church, it’s a very humbling experience.”

The Rev. Jason Soltysiak, assistant pastor at St. Stanislaus, learned the news of the vote on Tuesday from “about 150 text messages” from church members, but he spread the word in the traditional way – by ringing the cathedral bells.

“That’s, I guess, our version of the white smoke,” he said, referring to the signal that indicates the selection of a new pope in the Roman Catholic church.

An elderly parishioner, hearing the bells, called Soltysiak and left a message.

“He said, ‘By those bells ringing I can only assume that our pastor is now the prime bishop,'” Soltysiak recalled Tuesday afternoon. “As he choked away tears he said, ‘I’m so happy I could cry.'”

Current Prime Bishop Robert M. Nemkovich must retire from the position because of age limits set by church law. He was elected in 2002.

Another sad tale

From the MyWebTimes: Small church many called home

Stefan and Teresa Pazur came to Streator (IL) with their family from Poland 27 years ago.

Since the first day they set foot in the United States, St. Casimir Church on Livingston Street has been their home.

“I didn’t know anybody,” Stefan said. “I didn’t know anything about Streator. I didn’t speak English. My family didn’t speak English.”

The smallest of Streator’s four Catholic churches made them feel at home because of its rich Polish heritage.

In 1916, a group of families of Polish descent requested the formation of St. Casimir’s parish. The parish purchased a church from the Beulah Baptist congregation at the corner of Livingston and Illinois streets.

The wooden Russian Orthodox Catholic Church was a gift from Czar Alexander III of Russia for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. At the conclusions of the exposition, the building was dismantled, shipped to Streator and reassembled. It was used by a Russian Orthodox congregation until the baptists [sic] purchased it.

St. Casimir’s first Mass was celebrated on Christmas Eve in 1916. Dedication ceremonies were in April 1917 with Bishop E.N. Dunne. The Rev. Mieczyslaus T. Szalewski was the organizer and first pastor of St. Casimir Church.

Shortly afterward, an addition to the church provided two classrooms for parish children to attend school. The Franciscan Sisters ran the school until it was discontinued in 1931.

In 1962, the Rev. Marion Switka was appointed to the parish. He realized there was a need for extensive renovation or a new building.

The old building was razed and a new building, which currently stands, was constructed.

Parishioner Diane Safarcyk Crawford recalls the construction.

“It was sad to see the old church go, but it was no longer functional,” said Safarcyk, who played organ during high school for $1 a Mass. “I remember them raising the steeples and cleaning up after the carpenters.”

During construction of the new building, Masses on Sundays and holy days were in the Polish National Hall across the street and weekday Masses in the basement of the rectory.

Finally, the first Mass at the new church was celebrated on Christmas Eve in 1964. The Rev. George Dzuryo conducted the blessing and consecration of the altar.

The new edifice is of ultramodern pie-fold architecture.

The altar is made of gray granite, slightly tapered from top to bottom, and rests on a base of gray granite forms that create crosses encircling the altar. The altar signifies the firm, solid foundation of the Catholic faith.

Services were suspended in 2004 due to the Rev. Monsignor Jerome Ham’s health. Parishioners conducted a weekly Divine Mercy Novena on Wednesdays.

The church will now be closed to consolidate into St. Michael the Archangel, along with St. Anthony, St. Stephen and Immaculate Conception churches.

“It’s sad,” said Grace Gura, whose husband Ed has a strong Polish heritage. “My husband helped building it. Our daughter was the first one christened in the new church and we were the last ones married in the old one.”

Another Parish where the people honored and kept the presence of Christ, even in the absence of a priest. Sad that they could loose what they had built. Ownership by the laity goes a long way to stopping such closures — part of why the PNCC exists, and why many former Roman Catholics are approaching us after their parishes are closed against their will.

Debunking nativism and stereotyping

From The Bristol Press: Addressing Polish stereotypes

Author and scholar Danusha V. Goska came to CCSU to give her “Fiedorczyk” otherwise known as “Brute Polak” lecture, poking holes at stereotypes to a receptive audience Thursday night.

Particularly in the United States, stereotyping of different people is commonplace and unfortunately, socially acceptable, she said.

“In America, Poles have become the prototypical ethnicity associated with the working class. Prejudice against Poles is often commingled with contempt for working class people, and for manual labor itself.”

She discussed the toxic nature of stereotypes and pointed out that “If you think stereotypically, you will stereotype everyone, including yourself.”

Professor M.B. Biskupski, the S.A. Blejwas Chair of Polish American Studies introduced Goska, who teaches at William Paterson University. Biskupski has dedicated his academic career to “setting straight the misinformation about Poles,” according to CCSU media relations officer Janice Palmer.

Goska has written a book on the subject, titled “Bieganski,” which specifically addresses the issues associated with the interaction between people of different cultures, nationalities, ethnicities, and religions, but specifically Jewish, Christian and Muslim relations. This subject encompasses everything from stereotypes, racism, immigration, tolerance, and multiculturalism, the media’s treatment of the concept of ethnicity, the online spread of stereotypes and hate, and the Holocaust.

The process of finding someone willing to publish one’s writing is never an easy feat, but for Goska, it seemed impossible. She began showing publishers “Bieganski” in 2002 and continuously received the same reaction: initial praise, promise of publication, and then a final backing-out. Each of the rejections in this series always employed the same reasoning; although compassionately moving, her words were to be written by some famous scholar, not an unknown Polish-[Roman] Catholic writer.

Finally in 2009, her long search ended when she found a pair courageous enough to take on the controversial book and set it out into the world. Antony Polonsky, Albert Abramson Chair of Holocaust Studies at Brandeis University, suggested Academic Studies Press, run by Igor and Kira Nemirovsky.

Before her speech, Goska told reporters, “I knew that somewhere out there were my fellow Poles and Polish Americans, and I vowed that I would reach them someday with a book that would serve them, serve my ancestors, and serve my own family. In the upcoming lecture at CCSU, I will finally reach my audience.”

It would be interesting to see the author address the role of the PNCC and other early Polonia organizations, such as the PNU (not necessarily Roman Catholic at the time, but inclusive of R.C., PNCC, Protestant, and Jewish Polish immigrants), in both fighting nativism and in building the underpinnings of the success found by future generations.

Bishop Hodur, of course, stressed the idea of cohesive community, education, literacy, representation, Trade Unionism, participative democracy, and self-sustaining communities.

Parish and Community Picnic at Holy Trinity and St. Joseph in Linden, NJ: The annual parish and community picnic will be held on the Holy Trinity and St. Joseph PNCC church grounds, 407 Ziegler Avenue, Linden, NJ, Sunday, September 12th. The picnic is preceded by High Holy Mass in Polish at 11am, Rev. Jan Kość principal celebrant. The menu includes a featured a chicken dinner, as well as a full selection of Polish favorites like homemade pierogi, gołąbki (stuffed cabbage), and kielbasa. Other picnic favorites will be featured as well as fun and games. All are welcome.

PNCC Webinar: The Western Diocese of the PNCC is hosting a Webinar on the history and organization of the PNCC. All that is required to attend is a computer with Internet access. The Webinar is scheduled for Saturday, September 18th beginning at 9:30am Central Time (10:30am Eastern Time). The main presentation will be about one hour and there will be a half-hour available for questions and discussion after the main presentation. Registration detail are not yet available. I will provide updated information as it becomes available.

More on church closings

From the Los Angeles Times: Cleveland’s Catholic Church closures leave ethnic enclaves dispirited
Proud Eastern European communities fight to save what they see as a cultural heritage.

On a back street in urban Cleveland, Hungarian immigrants built St. Emeric Catholic Church, where a dozen stained glass windows recall their history and a mural of their first king, St. Stephen, overlooks the altar.

For more than 100 years, waves of Hungarians swept into Cleveland from the wars and upheavals in Europe, finding work in the area’s steel mills and auto plants. They were part of a tide of Eastern Europeans who became a backbone of the industrial economy here.

But the factories have been closing in recent decades, and now the churches are closing too.

Under orders of Cleveland Bishop Richard Gerard Lennon, St. Emeric parish will be eliminated and the church, along with an adjoining Hungarian Boy Scout center and a cultural school, will be closed.

In one of the largest retrenchments of the Roman Catholic Church in America, Lennon ordered the closure of 50 parishes in his diocese, more than half of them with ethnic congregations —” largely Eastern European.

The final closures are occurring this month, fueling sadness and anger among parishioners.

“I pray every day to keep St. Emeric open,” said Joseph Balint, who immigrated to Cleveland and worked at a naval weapons factory after he fought in the Hungarian revolution. “It is really a sad story, but I believe in miracles.”

The communities are not going down without a fight. They have marched on the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland and petitioned the church courts in Rome. Each Sunday, a group of Poles gathers outside the closed St. Casimir Church on the northeastern side of the city, praying and singing the Polish national anthem.

“These tough men came to this country and built churches for themselves,” said Malgosia Feckanin, who left Poland during the Cold War and prays outside St. Casimir. “Now this man, Richard Lennon, wants to take them away. It reminds me so much of communism.”

So far, Lennon has not backed off. On many Sundays, he personally says a final Mass at the churches scheduled for closure, though he is sometimes unwelcome.

Plainclothes Cleveland police sit in the pews and uniformed officers have a heavy presence outside. Protest signs refer to the diocese as “Lennongrad.”

“I am not without sensitivity,” a beleaguered Lennon told a congregation being closed in Akron this year. Howls of laughter erupted from the pews.

The problems in Cleveland are affecting much of the industrial Midwest, where ethnic enclaves have been hit hard during the long industrial decline. Dioceses in Scranton, Pa., Buffalo, N.Y., and Detroit have gone through similar shrinkages but without the public clash that has occurred in Cleveland.

Robert Tayek, a diocese spokesman, said Lennon was being blamed unfairly for a process that began before he arrived. Lennon took over on May 15, 2006, when it was already clear that Cleveland had too many parishes in its urban core.

The closures have been driven by monetary losses in many of the parishes, migration to the suburbs and a shortage of priests, Tayek said.

That explanation is sharply disputed by some of the parishes, which contend they are financially healthy and have recruited foreign-born priests to conduct services in native languages. The closures are pushing them into what they call impersonal suburban churches.

“Lennon wants a homogenized product,” said Stanislav Zadnik, an electrician unemployed since November 2008. On June 20, Zadnik’s Slovene parish, St. Lawrence, is scheduled to close.

Lennon supports the ethnic role the Catholic Church plays in Cleveland, Tayek said, but at some of those churches, “you can throw a baseball and not hit anybody.” In many cases, he said, the parishioners drive into the urban neighborhoods only for church services, and then often only on holidays.

A former television news reporter, Tayek identifies himself as a Bohemian —” half Slovak and half Czech. His grandfather worked in a steel mill, he said.

The sharp reaction has surprised the bishop, Tayek acknowledged. The diocese has received e-mailed threats of violence, he said.

About 10 parishes have filed formal appeals with Catholic courts in Rome. Even while those appeals are under review, the diocese has put some church properties up for sale, another sore point with the closed congregations.

In another effort to stop the closures, Nancy McGrath sued Lennon and the diocese, challenging their legal authority to move without the consent of the parishes. The diocese countersued, charging her with trespassing after a church service.

McGrath, who formed the Code Purple protest group, claims the diocese has a hidden agenda of grabbing parish bank accounts to pay off confidential settlements involving allegations of sexual abuse by priests.

St. Wendelin had $1.2 million in its account, St. Emeric $1.3 million and St. Lawrence $990,000, according to figures compiled by Endangered Catholics, a group formed to protest the church closures.

Tayek acknowledged that the diocese had made confidential legal settlements for sexual abuse claims, but he said the cost was covered by special reserves and that none of the church closings was based on a need to pay such claims.

The diocese, rather than seizing parish assets, will transfer money with the congregations when parishes are merged, Tayek said.

The bishop’s explanations fail to ring true in many of the tidy churches where closings are tearing apart friendships that go back a lifetime and threatening to loosen people’s grips on their cultural identities.

“We built these churches on the sweat and money of our ancestors who came here,” said John Juhasz, a member of St. Emeric. “The closings are an assault on the ethnic component of the church…”

Frustration continues to grow from Save the Catholic Parishes of Streator

Sixty-five people in support of the organization met Monday at Polish National Alliance Hall to discuss the fate of their Catholic parishes. The group discussed the engineering report by Healy, Bender and Associates, a possible protest at the steps of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria, and limiting donations to the parishes.

Organizer Melissa Peters invited members of the Vision 21 Board and Rev. Monsignor John Prendergast to the meeting. None attended.

Their absence stirred up a crowd looking for answers.

“Interest is starting to build as we hear about possible demolitions of the convent at St. Anthony and rectory at St. Stephen,” said Siobhan Elias, parishioner at St. Stephen. “Like I said, it’s rumors now but considering what happened with St. Stephen School (demolition). It happened so quickly, it wouldn’t surprise me if (those buildings) were slated to come down very soon. If people want to stop it, they have to stop giving or get involved.”

At the meeting, the group discussed busing people to Peoria to protest in front of Bishop Daniel Jenky’s church.

Others found it difficult to cut their donations. Karen Ricca, a St. Anthony parishioner, suggested only donating three out of the four weeks with a dollar, then on the fourth week, giving a regular donation. She said to set that money aside and give it only if the parishes decide to stay open.

“That is one of the few ways we can get the diocese to listen to us,” Elias said. “I called three people at their office and Ihaven’t heard back from any of them…”

Of course, I would invite these folks to do what the people of Scranton, Buffalo, Chicago, Toledo, and other locales have been doing since 1897, explore the faith, history, claims, governance, and polity of the Polish National Catholic Church. Do this in a positive way; you may be far more comfortable in a Church where you actually do have a voice and a vote.

Last March, I shared a theory of mine that most Hispanics expect Spanish language websites to be poor quality and, as a result, use the English-language version of a site even if Spanish is their preferred language. Expectations tend to be low because often the Spanish-language version of a given website tends to be inferior to the English version.

With Google’s free machine translation software, Google Translate, showing up on an increasing number of websites, I’m afraid that Hispanic online expectations are at risk of declining even further.

Google Translate is Free. Or is it?

Many marketers and web managers looking to reach Spanish speakers online view Google Translate as the silver bullet. Copy and paste a little snippet of code into your website and presto, your website is now available in Spanish (or any other language). As a result, you can now find Google Translate on many websites including those of countless federal, state and local Governments.

What you will also find on these websites is a lengthy disclaimer that prominently states that content translated by Google may not be accurate, reliable or timely. These disclaimers also completely absolve the website owner of any and all liability that may arise because of inaccurate machine translation. I want to be very clear: website owners are consciously using a system to translate their websites and in the same breath, acknowledging the system may not provide accurate, reliable or timely results.

I believe the cost of potentially inaccurate, unreliable or dated content on any website is simply too high for my clients. Even the smallest translation mistake can destroy the credibility of a website and the organization behind it, severely impacting valuable goodwill.

So no, Google Translate is not free. In fact it can be very costly…

Absolutely correct. As a matter of fact, when I was designing the Polonia Global Fund website, we hired translators (how I came to know Dr. Felipe Korzenny and the Captura Group) to build basic translations of our main informational pages.

It is particularly incumbent on us as Christians, and especially as members of the PNCC, to show respect for seekers from different backgrounds, cultures, and particularly languages. That respect is given through the proper and respectful use of language.

A person’s connection to their culture, and particularly to family and God, is best expressed in their native language. Bishop Hodur and his successors understood that among God’s gifts are the cultures and nations of the world. God’s grace is expressed in particular ways through the lens of culture, which then gifts the entire Church with a deeper understanding of salvation. They knew that there are nuances, even in God’s Word, based on culture.

We need to speak God’s word and give His message in clear and convincing ways which are understandable among the cultures we encounter. They too seek a portion of the one, holy, catholic, apostolic, and democratic Church. Let us give reason for the hope that is in us, and let us do so with respect.

U.S. History through Polish eyes

From the Niles Herald Spectator: Library exhibit shows U.S. history through pages of Polish records

As the number of Polish-Americans in Chicagoland attests, Poland and the United States have always had a special relationship. Those interested in another perspective, from the pages of Polish periodicals, can now view a large, colorful display of panels at Eisenhower Public Library in Harwood Heights.

The exhibit, “The United States in Polish Historiography and Periodicals from 1764-1919,” is presented by the Warsaw Public Library, with the special support of the Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, Bogdan Borusewicz.

On the 90th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two nations, the display shows how Poles viewed the United States, from before the American Revolution to the restoration of a Polish nation after World War I.

One early panel includes a letter from Poland. When the Americans were still divided into colonies, on March 20, 1768, Polish King Stanislaw August Poniatowski wrote to American Gen. Charles Lee: “Why do they deny your colonies the right to representation in the English Parliament?”

Two famous Polish military figures, Kazimierz Pulaski and Tadeusz Kosciuszko, contributed to the American cause during the Revolutionary War. On display panels, one can see Pulaski felled by a bullet at Savannah in 1779, the stronghold Kosciuszko designed at West Point, and Kosciuszko winning the title of brigadier general from Gen. George Washington.

Later, panels portray Polish life during the 1890s and early-1900s, when massive numbers of immigrants came to America. Photographs and documents show paramilitary organizations like the Chicago Polish Falcons, the Polish press, the Polish Catholic Church, the Polish schools, the Polish Roman Catholic Union, and the Polish National Alliance.

Other highlights include Poles participating on both sides of the Civil War and American relief efforts for Poland during World War I led by future President Herbert Hoover, just before Poland finally regained its status as a recognized nation.

Library Director Ron Stoch said that he particularly enjoyed information about Poles across the country, not just in Chicago but in Buffalo and Detroit, and about Poles living in America in the late 19th century who organized to create a nation of Poland modeled on the image of the United States.

An interesting observation which closely ties to the history of the PNCC – a Church organized by Poles in the United States, and exported back to Poland, that is both Catholic and democratic.

Bishop Hodur and the founders sought to meld Catholicism with their experience of the ideals of American democracy. Remember that they looked to the ideals, not the actual implementation of democracy in the United States since, for the most part, their immigrant experience had been one of exclusion more than inclusion. In large measure, Polish immigrants were excluded from the upper echelons of the R.C. Church, politics, and business. Many of my friend’s families were still changing their last names right through the 1960’s so as to provide for job advancement.

The founders of the PNCC saw that in freedom they could best strive after their yearnings for God. True freedom, which respects the rights of all, not just the elite or the “I know what’s best for you” government and chattering classes, is best provided for in a society that is truly free and democratic. It is one of the things that Poles had always admired about the United States.

Praise God for His gift of liberty

On July 4, 1897, Independence Day, the Rev. Francis Hodur blessed the cornerstone of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Cathedral in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

It was fitting that a Church which called men and women to the freedom given by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and which recognized that they had the freedom of citizens, to self-govern and to have a voice and a vote in the legislative governance of the Church, a say over how their hard earned contributions are used, such that it is to the glory of God and for their benefit in reaching heaven, would look to this feast of freedom as a symbolic day. The Polish National Catholic Church, founded in Scranton, Pennsylvania, saw this enlightened moment in American history for what it was, a recognition that our independence, our rights as free people are not something given by man.

The founders were clear in their effort to establish this country on what is from God. Man’s judgments and attitudes are changeable. One man may be in a moment a freedom fighter and in the next a dictator. Instead, as the founders wrote:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. —” That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, —” That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Self-evident truths and unalienable rights are not man’s truths or the rights given by men, are not just a fashion for the times, or a changeable fad, but rather eternally established truths and rights, set forth by God, for the happiness and enlightenment of all people. As Samuel Adams stated:

He who made all men hath made the truths necessary to human happiness obvious to all.— — from American Independence, a speech delivered by Samuel Adams at the State House in Philadelphia, August 1, 1776.

On this day which we honor as our birthday, the 234th anniversary of the founding of our nation, and a day on which we gather in churches throughout our country because we are free to do so by the very document signed this day, we also recognize that our Holy Polish National Catholic Church was established as a Church in which our freedom is honored, in which we have not only obligations, but rights.
